The World Bank has pledged $2.5 billion to educate and empower adolescent girls in low-income countries.
The announcement was made at the “Let Girls Learn!” event during the World Bank Group-IMF Spring Meetings, was followed by a call to action from the First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama.
About 75 percent of funds will go to countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
US first lady Michelle Obama praised the initiative and said that, “When we invest in girls’ education, when we embrace women in our workforce, that just doesn’t benefit them, it benefits all of us.”
