The “Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE)” Program was established by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) in 2008. This fellowship is designed to encourage young Indian talent to pursue jobs in science and technology and has three categories. 

INSPIRE Faculty Fellowship Scheme awards, post-doctoral fellowships to young researchers for independent research in their field, and the development of their careers as researchers.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A candidate must be an Indian citizen or a person of Indian origin with PIO status who holds a Ph.D. degree from a recognized university in science, mathematics, engineering, pharmacy, medicine, or agriculture-related topics.
  • Faculty members must have a minimum of 60% (or equivalent CGPA) throughout their academic careers, beginning with the higher secondary test (class XII onwards).
  • Candidates who have submitted their Ph.D. theses but have not yet received their degrees will also be considered. However, the fellowship will only be confirmed after the Ph.D. degree has been conferred. As of January 1, 2021, the upper age restriction is 32 years.

Selection Procedure

Candidates will be chosen through a three-tier procedure that includes application evaluation by discipline-based expert committees (INSA), apex level committee (INSA), and INSPIRE faculty award council recommendations (DST).

Fellowship Amount

Candidates selected for the fellowship will get a combined amount of Rs 1,25,000 per month as a monthly stipend. In addition, each selected candidate will receive a research grant of Rs 7 lakh each year for the next five years, plus any carryover funds from the previous year.
