There is an increased demand from the Indian corporate business organisations, for women lawyers. Engaging women lawyers will enable the companies in gaining skilled personnel, excelling men in several vital areas.  This also provides diversity from the male dominated work environment to comply with new regulations.  Search consultants data suggest a 15-30% increase in demand for women candidates.

The increase in demand could be observed from the following locations;

  1. Two thirds of legal posts made by Michael Page India, at the middle or senior level are women.
  2. For legal talent specialist Vahura, 50% of hires were women compared with 20% last year.
  3. Companies such as Crompton Greaves, Citi, Mondelez, Carlson Rezidor, Piramal and GE are focused on hiring of more women in their legal teams.
  4. According to Nicolas Dumoulin, Regional Director, Michael Page India, “In 2015, for the first time, we had companies coming in with specific demands for female legal candidates”.
  5. Karl Fernandez, head of the in house practise group concurred.  There’s a rising trend to hire female candidates across all levels.
  6. After a career break, openings are for hiring women with sound experience returning to full time work.
  7. Large institutional majors have always preferred women in leadership, to create a balanced and diverse team.


The recent senior level inductions was that of Farnawaz Mistry, joined as legal counsel in Mondelez in South Asia.  Nandini Mehta joined as as general counsel and its first legal head.
