To give a boost to the research work, two of IIT Madras alumni —Silicon valley based Dr Anand Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayanan — have donated $1 million to the institute.
The programme will fund visiting chairs in CSE (Computer Science and Engineering) to lead research on data-driven approaches to solve important problem.
This was announced at the 42nd International Conference on Very Large Data Bases in New Delhi on Wednesday.
These visiting chairs will focus on teaching and research and help attract young faculty, students, research scholars and postdocs to the CSE Department at IIT Madras. The initiative will be named “Venky Harinarayan and Anand Rajaraman Visiting Chair Program”.
Besides the chair professors has to involved in teaching or co-teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses, co-advising students and assisting in recruitment of post-doctoral fellows.
As an example, two-week courses may be offered by the chair professor and may be continued, if necessary for course completion by an IITM faculty.
For the selection of the chair professor, an advisory committee of Dr Rajaraman, Prof Jeff Ullman (Stanford) and Prof Randy Katz (UC-Berkeley) has been constituted. They will also look after the ongoing review and assessment process.
