The HRD Ministry on Monday said upto 5928 teaching positions in the various central universities are vacant.

According to a written reply by HRD Minister Smriti Irani in Lok Sabha, there are 16,600 teaching positions in various central universities.

As per the data provided by HRD Minister Smriti Irani, the number of existing posts as on January 1, 2016 is 10,672 while 5,928 posts are vacant.

The onus of filling up the vacancies lies with the universities which are autonomous bodies, HRD Minister Smriti Irani said.

She said UGC has informed that out of 34,272 sanctioned non-teaching posts in 39 central universities, 10,015 posts were lying vacant on January 1.

There are 112 vacant posts of professors in ST category, with maximum 31 being in Delhi universities.  There are 245 posts of associate professors vacant in this category in the varsities, she added.
